Abstract
An architecture or reference model helps to promote clear compatible standards. This paper examines the implicit architectures and reference models for the next generation of the web. We first consider the problem by looking at the standards and the standardization process in terms of the goals those standards attempt to achieve. We then examine five significant efforts with an eye to how they can contribute to the design of the next generation web. The paper concludes with a framework for an architecture for the next generation web in terms of its goals, major components, and criteria for assessment.
