THE RECENT RULING of the U.S. Court ofAppeals for the Federal Circuit in RambusInc. v. Infineon Technologies AG, 318 F.3d1081 (Fed. Cir. 2003), has awakened industryto the perils awaiting patent owners thatparticipate in committees that establishindustry standards. Industry standards aretechnical rules agreed to and followed bymanufacturers of computer equipment andother products having components that needto communicate with one another.
