Preventing abuse of IEEE standards policy

The current IEEE policy on patents (see the “IEEE patent policy” sidebar) is the same as that of the American National Standards Institute. This policy probably represents the current state of the art, and there is little need or likelihood that it will change significantly. Recently, however, interpretation problems have arisen, and it has become apparent that some companies have sought to game the process as part of their business plans.
