Abstract
In 2004, the American National Standards Institute created a document entitled the "American National Standards strategy." Its revision in 2004 was undertaken in a conservative, evolutionary fashion. However, the world has changed radically in the last twenty years, giving rise to the question of whether a "national" standards strategy is not an anachronism by its nature. In this article, the author reviews the changes in the standard setting landscape and the world that have occurred in that time period in that time period that lead to this conclusions. He then proposes that a proper standards strategy for the future would be radically different than the document now in preparation, and describes what such a strategy might recommend.
