The importance of IT standards has increased over the past ten to twenty years. Increasingly IT managers must make decisions regarding the adoption of standards for IT development. This paper is a tutorial for managers in the basics of standards, what they are, why they are important, how they are developed, and what considerations are important when making the decision to adopt a standard, or to develop a new one.
