Activities that dominate our lives are made possible, in part, by the development of standards, some having an impact across centuries. Today’s technology rich environment is in need of an efficient standard setting mechanism more than ever. In the past, the consensus building approach to standardization was appropriate to the telecommunication industry. However, telecommunications and information technology are currently merging together. The standardization process used throughout the evolution of the telecommunications industry is no longer applicable in this merged environment. Although multiple alternative methods of standardization have gained support, no single method has proven itself superior.
