Abstract
The purpose of this report, commissioned by NASA, was to assess the return on investment that the implementation of geospatial information standards of various types can provide to those that undertake the cost and resource allocation necessary to adopt them. The report documents and compares two business cases, one with incidental use of open standards, and one involving extensive utilization of appropriate standards. The report found returns of investment in the 20 to 25% range, depending upon the measurement criteria, and concludes that significant economic and other benefits can be obtained from the utilization of open standards generally, and geospatial standards in the instant case.
